Xi'an Shiyou University is the only multi-disciplinary general higher education institution in Northwestern China that specializes in petroleum and petrochemicals. It is a college jointly established by the Shaanxi Provincial People’s Government and the three major national petroleum companies, and a high-level university construction college in Shaanxi Province. The school started from the Northwest Petroleum Industry Technical College founded in 1951, which is affiliated to the Central Ministry of Fuel Industry. In 1958, it was upgraded and renamed Xi'an Petroleum Institute. In 1969, the college ceased operation and changed its factory. In 1980, Xi'an Petroleum Institute resumed its operation and was subordinate to the Ministry of Petroleum Industry. In 2000, it was transferred from the China National Petroleum Corporation to a joint construction between the central and local governments, mainly managed by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government. In 2003, it was renamed Xi'an Shiyou University. In 2011, it was selected as a high-level university construction institution in Shaanxi Province. The Yanta campus of the school is located at No. 18, the east section of the second electronic road in Xi’an, the Mingde campus is located at No. 11 Zhangba East Road, Xi’an, and the Huyi campus is located at No. 18 Fengjing Avenue, Fengjing Industrial Park, Xi’an. The school occupies an area of 2078 mu, with a total fixed assets value of 2.838 billion yuan and a total value of 632 million yuan in equipment. The school recruits students from 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government, and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. It has 14 colleges and 2 directly affiliated departments. Since the establishment of the school, nearly 160,000 graduates of various types have been trained.
